Beekies Neuk: Oldmeldrum Road, Newmachar

WAKING up to stormy skies and torrential rain, I was facing a cosy Sunday spent on the sofa watching bad TV.

But when my mate suggested we go out for a pub lunch, I thought it would be the perfect way to banish the summertime blues. So we headed to family-run Beekies Neuk in Newmachar and, after deliberating over the wide range of dishes on offer, a friendly staff member took our order.

To start, I chose mozzarella sticks the soft, gooey cheese centres were wrapped in crispy breadcrumbs, and came with a tangy chilli dip and salad.

My mate went for the deliciously rich pate, and melba toast.

For my main course, I settled on the Cajun chicken. The delicious, juicy portions were coated in a light, spicy seasoning, and the chips were chunky and crisp. My friend ordered the roast beef special. With a huge amount of succulent beef, he was more than happy with his choice, though he would have liked more vegetables. With drinks the bill came to a very reasonable £39.15.

A great new place to go when I need good homemade food on a rainy day.

PUB GRUB: Beekies Neuk serves huge portions.

AFTER spending the day moving house, cooking a meal was never going to be on the cards.

After all, every spoon and saucepan I own was scattered among various boxes, which in turn were strewn across my new living room floor.

So my girlfriend’s suggestion of a trip out of the city to grab a bite to eat was a welcome one.

We plumped for Beekies Neuk, a homely family-run pub in Newmachar. After settling into our cosy booth, our starters were quick to arrive.

My nachos would have been pretty standard fare, but were lifted by the tasty chilli heaped on top and the surprisingly fresh and delicious side salad, with peppers and red onion nestling among the usual lettuce and tomato.

My girlfriend’s Beekies pate came with the same salad and the perfect amount of toast to go with the creamy chicken liver dish.

No sooner had our empty plates disappeared into the kitchen than our mains arrived – everyone appreciates quick service, but we could have maybe done with a wee break!

Not to worry – I would have been delighted to eat these beef olives any time. Plump and juicy, the meat was stuffed to bursting point with oatmeal and came with three gigantic roast potatoes and veg.
